COHLIT eNewsletter October 2011

Richard Novak
Associate Vice President for Continuing Studies and Distance Learning

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to introduce this new e-newsletter, created by the newly-formed Center for Online & Hybrid Learning and Instructional Technologies (COHLIT). Both developments are part of our efforts to foster an active community of practice among faculty and staff who teach and develop online and hybrid courses, along with those who use instructional technologies to enrich the face-to-face learning environment. Our goal is to create an open environment for sharing what’s working well and what areas we can improve in online learning, and to introduce new innovations in this rapidly evolving field. Each e-newsletter will provide timely information, updates, e-teaching tips and strategies, and will highlight the work of one of our exemplary online instructors. In this newsletter, for example, we introduce Lilia Pavlovsky, long-time instructor for the School of Communication and Information. The e-newsletter, along with the workshops, webinars and conferences hosted by COHLIT, will be complemented by other web-based tools and resources to foster collaboration among faculty.

We look forward to working closely with you to enhance distance education at Rutgers. We invite you to make this community your own and to share any suggestions you may have for how we can make Rutgers a national leader in this key area for the future of higher education. We will be forming a faculty advisory board to guide this effort. Together, we can build up a community that is supportive, collaborative, innovative and visionary.

Yours,

David Finegold
Senior Vice President for Lifelong Learning and Strategic Growth

Respondus

Many faculty would like to give their students exams and quizzes in their Learning Studios course shell. Adding even something as simple as an un-graded self-assessment quiz to let students know if they’re successful in their understandings of the course material can really improve both students’ engagement with the class as well as helping to meet the learning objectives for the class.

Online Instructor Profile: Dr. Lilia Pavlovsky

My dissertation research focused on how design of information systems impacts behavior so I was naturally drawn to distance education because it offered the opportunity to explore how virtual learning spaces shape educational experiences. As a non-tenure track faculty member at the School of Communication and Information I have had the opportunity to apply and expand my expertise in teaching, course design and development to the fully online Masters Program in Library and Information Studies.
